Gilbert (Gil) George Latimer

Gilbert (Gil) George Latimer of Bayfield, Ontario, passed away in his 72nd year on June 23rd, 2026, at Stratford General Hospital, with loved ones by his side.

Born and raised in Toronto, Gil loved visiting his grandparents in Bayfield, and in 1978, he moved to the village permanently and raised his two daughters in a community surrounded by friends and extended family. He served the community as a hockey coach and volunteer firefighter. Gil was also a gifted electrician who took quiet pride in his work.

Gil loved all sports, especially golf and hockey. He played many sports and especially enjoyed his time in net as goalie for the Bayfield Blackhawks.  He was passionate in his devotion to the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Tigers. He attended countless sporting events in his lifetime, and his television never moved from the sports channels, even when he was “resting his eyes.”

He loved his life at Bluewater Golf and Campground. He was an excellent golfer and spent as much time as possible on the course.  He and Marilyn, his partner of 26 years, were surrounded by many dear friends in the park who would stop by at any time.  Above all, Gil dearly loved his family.

Gil is survived by his loving partner Marilyn; his daughters Wendy (Trevor) and Ashleigh (Steve); his granddaughter Josephine; his brother Bill (Jeanie); his sister Christie (Kevin); Marilyn’s children John (Karen) and David (Tori); step-grandchildren Sloane and Jack. Gil will be greatly missed by his golfing buddies, his fellow hunters and many other family members and friends.

A celebration of life will take place at Bluewater Golf Course, Club House on July 14th, 1-4pm.  Gil was grateful for all the support he received these past few months from friends and family.  He greatly appreciated the care from the doctors and nurses at The Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre as well as the Clinton and Stratford Hospitals.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choosing. If you simply wish to honour Gil, leave a peanut out for a blue jay.

Messages and condolences for the family may be left in the comments box below.
