She was Loving mother of Natalie Simmons (Sean), Rachael and Aaron Brown-Kert (Brianne). Cherished Grandmother of Alyssa (Rachael), Zara and Ezra (Natalie), Elijah (Aaron) and Great Grandmother of Lorelei and A.J. (Alyssa). Joyce is preceded in death by her parents Stephen and Cora Brown. She is survived by 6 siblings, many nieces and nephews.
Joyce Louise Brown was born at home in Hamilton, Ontario on May 26, 1950. She was married and divorced. Joyce completed high school at Southmount Secondary School and went on to attend Mohawk College for Medical Radiation and X-ray Technology. She held positions as an Ultrasound and X-Ray Technician while working at the Hamilton General Hospital, Henderson Hospital and McMaster Hospital.
After the birth of her youngest child Aaron, she enrolled part-time at McMaster University where she obtained her degree. She graduated with an Honors BA in English Literature and a minor in Women’s Studies. After graduation, she worked at McMaster University as a TA in the Women’s Studies Dept. She also held positions with NGO’s including: The Hamilton Region Arts Council and The Ottawa Arts Council. For a time, she also a consultant with the United Nations.
Joyce was an active member of the arts community in Hamilton. She was a published poet, spoken word artist and a youth mentor. In her later years, she volunteered most of her time at the Kingsway Blessing Centre in Hamilton. She earned numerous awards and distinctions including Women of the Year. Joyce had a passion for gardening, cooking, and she was a music lover (Motown). Joyce loved animals, most recently her miniature chihuahua Porsche.
